Fair to Good; significant age-related wear, craquelure, and losses typical of 13th-century tempera works
Estimated Market Value
$45,000,000 - $60,000,000 (based on 2004 acquisition price adjusted for inflation and rarity)

Art Historical Significance
A pivotal work in Western art history, representing the transition from flat Byzantine icons to the psychological depth and spatial awareness of the Renaissance; Duccio is the father of Sienese painting.
Notable Features
Includes the original integral engaged frame which is rare for this period; features very fine needle-point punchwork in the halo and a parapet at the bottom which suggests an early attempt at spatial illusionism.
Condition Issues
Extensive 'alligator' craquelure across the surface; some abrasion of the gold leaf; visible wood grain patterns (telegraphing) through the gesso; minor losses at the edges of the original engaged frame; historical cleaning has thinned some glazes.
Conservation Recommendations
Strict climate control (50% RH); UV-filtered glazing; minimal physical intervention to preserve original 13th-century patina; avoid any humidity fluctuations to prevent further panel warping.
