Subject Description
A solitary monk stands on a low dune, facing a dark, expansive sea under a vast, overcast sky. Condition & Value Assessment
Condition Assessment
Very Good (following major restoration in 2013-2016).
Estimated Market Value
$50,000,000 - $100,000,000 (Estimate based on its status as a foundational masterpiece of Western art; rarely would such a work reach the open market).
Auction Estimate
$60,000,000 - $90,000,000
Provenance History
Acquired by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1810; subsequently held in the Prussian Royal collections; currently in the collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
Art Historical Significance
One of the most important works of the Romantic era. It represents a pivot toward modernism through its minimalist composition and preoccupation with existential solitude. It was famously paired with 'Abbey in the Oakwood' when first exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1810.
Notable Features
The visible pentimenti (under-drawings/changes) show Friedrich's struggle with the composition; the absence of the previously planned ships emphasizes the total isolation of the figure.
Condition Issues
Historically suffered from darkening of the sky and blue pigments; older restorations had altered the artist's original color intended for the horizon. It has undergone technical analysis revealing Friedrich originally painted two small ships near the horizon which he later painted out.
Conservation Recommendations
Should be maintained in a climate-controlled environment (approx. 20°C and 50% humidity) with low UV light exposure. The current gilded frame is a reconstruction but appropriate for its historical context.
