Condition & Value Assessment

Condition Assessment

Good to Very Good; as an outdoor public sculpture, it is subject to weathering and urban pollution but is periodically maintained.

Estimated Market Value

$5,000,000 - $8,000,000 (Based on the scale and significance of di Suvero's monumental public works).

Auction Estimate

$4,000,000 - $6,000,000 (Though monumental works of this scale are rarely sold via traditional auction houses).

Provenance History

Originally installed at St. John's Rotary near the Holland Tunnel; relocated to Zuccotti Park (formerly Liberty Plaza Park) in 2006. Owned by the artist and lent through the Storm King Art Center or maintained by Brookfield Properties.

Art Historical Significance

Di Suvero is a pioneer of the use of industrial steel and cranes in fine art. This piece is a signature example of his 'spatial drawings' and gained significant cultural fame as a backdrop for the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011.

Notable Features

The open-air composition allows the sky to become part of the work; it is designed to be interacted with from a 360-degree street-level perspective.

Condition Issues

Surface oxidation (rust) potential at joints, fading of the red pigment due to UV exposure, and minor urban debris or graffiti at the base.

Conservation Recommendations

Regular inspection of structural bolts, power washing to remove pollutants, and periodic repainting with high-grade industrial UV-resistant coating to maintain the 'di Suvero Red'.
