Subject Description
A 'conversation piece' depicting the collector Charles Towneley seated among his collection of classical marbles at 7 Park Street, Westminster. He is joined by his friends: the paleontologist Thomas Astle, the scholar Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville, and Charles Greville. The composition features famous sculptures like the Townley Venus, the Discobolus, and the Clytie bust, arranged for artistic effect rather than historical accuracy.

Provenance History

The painting features a 'compressed' reality where sculptures from different rooms are gathered into one view. The Discobolus in the foreground was actually added later to the painting after it was discovered in 1791 (repainted by the artist).
