A masterpiece of micro-carving that exemplifies the Northern European preoccupation with mortality, the physical process of decay, and salvation during the early 16th century. It represents the intersection of luxury goods and personal piety.
Notable Features
Virtuosic 'bifurcated' heads showing life and death simultaneously; use of an emerald to symbolize hope/resurrection; rare surviving silver-gilt mounts connecting the ivory segments.
Condition Issues
Minor surface wear consistent with age and handling; slight oxidization of silver mounts; typical stable micro-cracking common in historic ivory.
Conservation Recommendations
Maintain stable humidity and temperature (RH 45-55%) to prevent ivory cracking; UV-filtered lighting; display in a secure, vibration-free case.
