Good. The paint surface appears stable but shows typical age-related craquelure.
Estimated Market Value
$8,000 - $12,000
Auction Estimate
$6,000 - $10,000
Provenance History
Based on composition, this is a studio variant of the commission for Victor Amadeus I of Savoy, 3rd Prince of Carignano, dated 1716. Likely held in a private European collection prior to sale.
Art Historical Significance
This work is a significant example of the dissemination of Franceschini's designs through his active workshop. It reflects the refined, academic classicism that dominated Bolognese art in the early 18th century, emphasizing grace and balanced composition over the more turbulent high Baroque style.
Notable Features
The reduction in figure count (seven versus nine in the Bologna version) suggests a specific commission for a smaller domestic setting. The gilded period-style frame features leaf-and-dart motifs consistent with 18th or 19th-century presentation.
Condition Issues
Visible craquelure across the sky; frame shows minor gesso losses and chipping on the right inner edge; potential yellowing of the old varnish layer.
Conservation Recommendations
Surface cleaning and varnish refresh are recommended. UV light examination and infrared reflectography could clarify the extent of workshop vs. master involvement. Maintain in a climate-controlled environment with stable humidity.
Collector Notes
STUDIO OF MARCANTONIO FRANCESCHINI (ITALIAN 1648- 1729) PRIMAVERA Oil on canvas 60.5 × 73cm (23¾ × 28½ in.) The picture relates to Marcantonio Franceschini's Primavera in the Pinacoteca of Bologna. The Bologna painting was commissioned as part of a group representing the Four Seasons in March 1716 by Victor Amadeus I of Savoy, 3rd Prince of Carignano (1640- 1741) The central group of Primavera crowned by a putto and in conversation with a young man occurs in both the picture offered here, and in the Bologna version. The Bologna picture however, has nine figures, where this one has seven, and although his drapery is different, the central man is the only figure in the same pose in both pictures
