Subject Description
The scene depicts St. Bernard of Clairvaux writing his Homilies in honor of the Virgin Mary when she miraculously appears to him. The Virgin is accompanied by angels, one of whom looks directly at the viewer. St. Bernard is shown in his white Cistercian habit, seated in a rocky landscape representing his ascetic life. In the bottom right corner, the donor Francesco del Pugliese is depicted in profile in a pose of prayer. The inscription on the base of the frame reads 'IN REBVS DVBII MARIAM COGITA MARIAM INVOCA' (In doubtful matters think of Mary, call upon Mary).
