The painting depicts the coronation of Napoleon I and Empress Joséphine at Notre-Dame de Paris on December 2, 1804. Napoleon is shown standing, holding the crown above Joséphine, who kneels before him, while Pope Pius VII sits behind him. The composition is theatrical, emphasizing political power, legitimacy, and the grandeur of the First French Empire.
