Condition & Value Assessment
Condition Assessment
Good/Fair (as pictured); visible pronounced craquelure across the entire surface indicates aging of the lead-white ground and oil binder.
Estimated Market Value
$40,000,000 - $60,000,000 (estimation strictly for insurance/indemnity as it is a museum masterpiece)
Auction Estimate
$35,000,000 - $55,000,000
Provenance History
Commissioned by the Comte d'Artois (the future Charles X of France); later part of the French National Collections; currently held by the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
Art Historical Significance
A pivotal work of French Neoclassicism. Unlike David's more severe 'Oath of the Horatii', this work explores the theme of love and leisure (volupté), echoing the influence of Greco-Roman sculpture and the transition from Rococo sensuality to Enlightenment structural order.
Notable Features
Exquisite detail on the lyre featuring a miniature relief; the contrast between Paris's soft, almost feminine vulnerability and the structured architectural backdrop; the use of Caryatids in the background based on the Jean Goujon models in the Louvre.
Condition Issues
Widespread and deep craquelure pattern is predominant, particularly in the darker pigments and flesh tones; minor surface abrasions and potential light yellowing of aged varnish.
Conservation Recommendations
Requires climate-controlled environment (50% RH). Professional surface cleaning and potential varnish rejuvenation. Structural stabilization of the canvas to prevent lifting of the paint film along crack lines.
