Condition & Value Assessment

Condition Assessment

Good/Fair (Handled); The coin shows significant circulation wear, especially on the high points like the head of Liberty and the knee.

Estimated Market Value

$10 - $25 USD (based on current silver bullion value and common date/grade)

Auction Estimate

$5 - $15 USD (wholesale/unfiltered auction)

Provenance History

Standard United States circulation; likely held in a private collection as evidenced by the cardboard coin holder (2x2) visible in the background.

Art Historical Significance

A masterpiece of early 20th-century American numismatic art. MacNeil's design replaced the Barber coinage and is famous for its controversial initial 1916 design, which was modified in 1917 to cover Liberty's exposed breast with chainmail and adjust the stars.

Notable Features

Features the 'S' mint mark indicating production at the San Francisco Mint; recessed date design (standard for 1928) which helped prevent the date from wearing off as quickly as on earlier issues.

Condition Issues

Surface wear (rubbing) on the central figure, minor scratches, oxidation, and slight loss of detail in the 'IN GOD WE TRUST' motto and '1928' date due to circulation.

Conservation Recommendations

Keep in a PVC-free archival flip or slab; avoid cleaning or polishing which destroys original patina and value; maintain at a stable temperature and low humidity.
