Condition & Value Assessment
Condition Assessment
Good (considering age); historical restoration has preserved the structural integrity but some surface loss is evident
Estimated Market Value
Inestimable (National treasure of Italy)
Auction Estimate
Inestimable; if sold, it would likely set a world record for a Pre-Renaissance work, potentially exceeding $250 million

Art Historical Significance
One of the most important transition works in Western art history. It marks the shift from the rigid Byzantine 'Maniera Greca' toward a more lyrical, humanized Gothic style. It is the largest 13th-century panel painting surviving today and established the Sienese school's dominance in color and elegance.
Notable Features
Features a unique undulating gold hem on the Virgin's robe which contrasts with the stiffer Cimabue-style drapery; the frame contains 30 small painted roundels depicting various saints and prophets.
Condition Issues
Typical craquelure associated with age, some abrasion to gold leaf, vertical cracks in the wood support panel, and localized paint losses in the lower register
Conservation Recommendations
Strict climate control (50% RH, 20 degrees Celsius), UV-filtered non-reflective glass protection, and periodic surface monitoring for pigment stability
