The scene depicts the 1625 hand-over of the key to the Dutch city of Breda from Justin of Nassau to the Spanish general Ambrogio Spinola. It is notable for its humanist approach, showing the victor Spinola placing a conciliatory hand on the shoulder of the defeated general. The background features the smoking landscape of the battlefield and the 'lances' (pikes) of the Spanish infantry that give the painting its nickname.
